Chuck Bowen took these photos of James Arness and other members of the cast during filming of How The West Was Won in 1978 at Bent’s Fort. The episode was titled, “Buffalo Story.” We believe it was loosely based on the buffalo hunt near Kit Carson to entertain the Grand Duke Alexis of Russia in 1872.

From the summary on imdb.com: “Kate Macahan’s sister, Molly Culhane, joins the family. A Mormon family arrives at the homestead while fleeing religious persecution, but the patriarch soon charms Laura. Zeb mediates between the Army and the angry Sioux after a Russian royalty kills a buffalo on Sioux land. Luke aids a local sheriff and meets his feisty daughter.”

How the West Was Won was a tv series that aired from 1976-1979 starring James Arness and Bruce Boxleitner. It was about a family that traveled across the country from Virginia to pioneer new land.

  1. Brian Keith was there too. Im sure there were others. I would have liked to meet Ken Curtis( Curtis Yates ) as he and my wife’s father, Floyd Verhoeff were friends as kids and had adventures, that caught a train and ram away. They set off a cannon in lasAnimas on the 4th and put out Duchwall’s window. Good old days!
